چکیده

We present Input Finger Detection (IFD), a novel technique for nonvisual touch screen input, and its application, the Perkinput text entry method. With IFD, signals are input into a device with multi-point touches, where each finger represents one bit, either touching the screen or not. Maximum likelihood and tracking algorithms are used to detect which fingers touch the screen based on user-set reference points. The Perkinput text entry method uses the 6-bit Braille encoding with audio feedback, enabling oneand two-handed input. A longitudinal evaluation with 8 blind participants who are proficient in Braille showed that one-handed Perkinput was significantly faster and more accurate than iPhone’s VoiceOver. Furthermore, in a case study to evaluate expert performance, one user reached an average session speed of 17.56 words per minute (WPM) with an average uncorrected error rate of just 0.14% using one hand for input. The same participant reached an average session speed of 38.0 WPM with two-handed input and an error rate of just 0.26%. Her fastest phrase was entered at 52.4 WPM and no errors. Finger Based Techniques for Nonvisual Touchscreen Text Entry

This research proposes Finger Based Technique (FBT) for non-visual touch screen device interaction designed for blind users. Based on the proposed technique, the blind user can access virtual keys based on finger holding positions. Three different models have been proposed. They are Single Digit Finger-Digit Input (FDI), Double Digit FDI for digital text entry, and Finger-Text Input (FTI) for n...

Hand Posture's Effect on Touch Screen Text Input Behaviors: A Touch Area Based Study

Mobile devices with touch keyboards have become ubiquitous, but text entry on these devices remains slow and errorprone. Understanding touch patterns during text entry could be useful in designing robust error-correction algorithms for soft keyboards. In this paper, we present an analysis of text input behaviors on a soft QWERTY keyboard in three different text entry postures: index finger only...

Usability evaluation of single - stroke vs . multi - stroke gesture recognition for rapid text input on small screen mobile devices

Without physical keyboard, users have to turn to key-based or stylus-based text entry device for solutions. Stylus-based handwriting interaction seems more natural. However, problems of segmentation and recognition come out [3]. (Note that since 2007’s announcement of the iPhone, and widespread adaptability of capacitive touchscreens, stylus has gradually been replaced by finger-touch user inte...

MotionInput: Gestural Text Entry in the Air

Gestural keyboards have become a popular alternative to character-by-character entry on touch screen devices today. The obvious limitation to text entry via a touch screen though is that it is fixed to the device. For this project, we aimed to examine methodologies to input text with hand gestures in the air. This paper outlines a means to extend the implementation of gestural text entry on a t...

Multi-modal text entry and selection on a mobile device

Rich text tasks are increasingly common on mobile devices, requiring the user to interleave typing and selection to produce the text and formatting she desires. However, mobile devices are a rich input space where input does not need to be limited to a keyboard and touch. In this paper, we present two complementary studies evaluating four different input modalities to perform selection in suppo...
